I-17 Phoenix to Flagstaff: Breakdowns & Traffic Today
Multiple vehicle breakdowns snarled traffic along Interstate 17 in both directions today, according to reports from drivers. The disruptions occurred throughout the day, impacting travel between Phoenix, and Flagstaff.
I-17, designated as the Arizona Veterans Highway for much of its length, is a crucial transportation corridor within the state. According to the Arizona Department of Transportation, the highway spans 145.93 miles, beginning at its southern terminus where it intersects with Interstate 10 and US Route 60 in Phoenix and extending north to Interstate 40 in Flagstaff.
The incidents reported by drivers suggest a higher-than-normal volume of mechanical failures. While the specific causes of the breakdowns remain unconfirmed, the highway’s significant elevation gain – rising from 1,117 feet in Phoenix to 7,000 feet in Flagstaff – could be a contributing factor, placing increased stress on vehicle engines and cooling systems.
In the Phoenix metropolitan area, I-17 is commonly referred to as the Black Canyon Freeway, though the southernmost 4.16 miles are integrated into the Maricopa Freeway. The highway’s construction occurred in phases, with the final section completed in 1978. The route south of Cordes Lakes follows the original alignment of State Route 69, while the northern portion was built utilizing the former alignment of State Route 79.
As of late Saturday, Arizona Department of Transportation officials have not released a statement regarding the increased breakdown reports or any potential contributing factors. Traffic flow remains subject to intermittent delays as crews respond to individual incidents.
