Hypothyroidism & Supplements: 5 to Avoid | EatingWell

March 25, 2026 Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor Health

Individuals with hypothyroidism may need to reconsider their supplement regimens, as several commonly used products can interfere with medication effectiveness. A recent report highlights minerals like calcium, magnesium, and iron as potential culprits, binding to levothyroxine – a synthetic thyroid hormone used to treat hypothyroidism – and hindering its absorption.

According to experts, these minerals can chemically react with levothyroxine in the digestive system, preventing the body from fully utilizing the prescribed dose. This interference can lead to continued hypothyroid symptoms, despite consistent medication intake. The issue isn’t necessarily avoiding these essential nutrients altogether, but rather timing their consumption.

“Minerals like calcium, magnesium and iron can bind with medications, especially levothyroxine,” explains Dr. Marina Wolf, as reported by EatingWell. This binding effect reduces the amount of medication available for absorption, potentially requiring dosage adjustments or altered timing of supplement intake.

While a specific “hypothyroid diet” doesn’t exist, maintaining a balanced nutritional intake is crucial for overall health, including thyroid function. Experts recommend prioritizing a variety of whole foods, incorporating protein into each meal, and supporting a healthy gut microbiome. Cooking cruciferous vegetables is also advised, as raw forms can contain compounds that may interfere with thyroid hormone production.

The British Thyroid Foundation notes that maintaining a varied and healthy diet can be challenging, leading some individuals to explore supplementation. Still, careful consideration of potential interactions with thyroid medication is essential. Individuals considering supplements should discuss their plans with a healthcare professional to ensure they do not compromise treatment effectiveness.

The potential for supplement interference extends beyond minerals. Other substances may also impact levothyroxine absorption, underscoring the importance of a comprehensive medication review with a physician or pharmacist. Currently, there is no universally agreed-upon list of all potentially interacting substances, and ongoing research continues to refine understanding of these complex interactions.
