Ultrasound Guidance Can Minimize Pain during Knee Hyaluronic Acid Injections, Doctor Reveals
TAIPEI, taiwan - Concerns about pain associated with hyaluronic acid injections for knee osteoarthritis might potentially be alleviated through the use of ultrasound guidance, according to a physician at Fengrong Hospital. While intra-articular hyaluronic acid is a common treatment for degenerative arthritis, the experience isn’t necessarily painful, and a key factor in patient comfort lies in the injection method and the doctor’s expertise.
Research indicates that ultrasound-guided injections improve accuracy and reduce pain compared to unguided methods. This technology allows doctors to visualize the needle tip in real-time, ensuring precise placement of the therapeutic injection. Moreover, if fluid buildup (effusion) is detected during examination, the ultrasound can guide the needle directly to the effusion for drainage before injecting hyaluronic acid, perhaps reducing punctures and subsequent swelling and discomfort.
“If you have had obvious pain or a bad experience during injections in the past, you can actively discuss with your doctor whether to switch to ultrasonic guidance to reduce the occurrence of pain and make the treatment process more comfortable and smooth,” advises the attending physician of Fengrong Hospital’s rehabilitation department, author of the article.
