Huskers vs Vanderbilt: Punching Ticket to Sweet 16 | NCAA Tournament Preview
OKLAHOMA CITY — The Nebraska Cornhuskers seek their first-ever Sweet Sixteen appearance in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament on Saturday night, facing off against the Vanderbilt Commodores at the Paycom Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 9:02 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on TNT.
Nebraska (27-6) enters the contest following a dominant 76-47 victory over Troy in the first round on Thursday, marking the program’s initial NCAA Tournament win. The Cornhuskers’ 29-point margin of victory was the largest in a first NCAA Tournament win by any school since 1971, according to tournament data. Pryce Sandfort led all scorers with 23 points, including seven 3-pointers, tying a school postseason record. Jamarques Lawrence and Braden Frager added 13 points apiece, while Rienk Mast contributed 11 points, seven assists, and six rebounds.
The Huskers’ defense stifled Troy, holding them to a season-low 28.3 percent shooting and forcing 17 turnovers, which Nebraska converted into 17 points. The 47 points allowed and the shooting percentage represent season bests for the Nebraska defense, which has now limited 13 opponents to 60 points or fewer this season. The win also secured a program-record 27th victory of the season, surpassing the previous mark set in 1990-91.
Vanderbilt (27-8) advanced to the second round with a 78-68 win over McNeese on Thursday. Tyler Tanner paced the Commodores with 26 points, seven rebounds, and five assists. Vanderbilt averages 86.1 points per game, ranking among the top 20 nationally in scoring offense.
Nebraska’s success has been fueled by its 3-point shooting, with Sandfort currently tied for fifth nationally with 120 3-pointers made this season. The team has made 10 or more 3-pointers in 22 games, and has hit 351 total 3-pointers, a new school record. The Huskers are 18-4 when making at least 10 3-pointers in a game.
Defensively, Nebraska led the Large Ten in scoring defense during conference play, allowing just 66.2 points per game. The team also leads the conference in steals (7.3 per game) and turnover margin (+3.5).
Recently extended through the 2031-32 season, Nebraska Head Coach Fred Hoiberg has guided the Huskers to three consecutive 20-win seasons for the first time in program history. Hoiberg was named Big Ten Coach of the Year following the regular season, and several players earned conference accolades, including first-team All-Big Ten honors for Pryce Sandfort, Sixth Man of the Year for Braden Frager, and All-Defensive Team recognition for Sam Hoiberg.
A victory on Saturday would send Nebraska to the Sweet Sixteen, where they would face the winner of the matchup between No. 1 Florida and No. 9 Iowa in Houston next week.
According to ESPN Analytics, Vanderbilt has a 53.2% chance of winning, while Nebraska has a 46.8% chance.
