Huseierne: Households can save between 20,000 and 50,000 kroner annually

Huseierne: Households can save between 20,000 and 50,000 kroner annually

October 11, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

Norwegian households facing a recent interest rate hike to 4.5 percent can potentially free up between 20,000 and 50,000 kroner annually by reviewing fixed expenses such as mortgages, subscriptions, and insurance policies, according to Huseierne. The central bank’s policy rate increase from 4.25 percent to 4.5 percent has added financial pressure to residential housing costs across the country, where a standard 120-square-meter single-family home serves as the baseline for average calculations, ba.no reported.

Comparing Loan Terms Saves Households Money

Many consumers remain in the same banking agreements for years without verifying whether competitors offer better loan terms. Monica Bryner, district manager for Hordaland at Huseierne, noted that households often wait for political intervention rather than auditing their own finances. For a family holding a five-million-krone housing loan, a 0.5 percentage point difference in the borrowing rate yields an annual savings of approximately 25,000 kroner, ba.no reported.

Shoppers on Torgallmenningen in Bergen encountered the rising costs firsthand. Rune Nautnes, speaking to ba.no alongside his wife Merete Nautnes while utilizing the Bergen Spiser dining offer, learned his current mortgage rate sits at 5.27 percent and anticipated a climb toward 5.5 percent. While the couple actively monitors their insurance coverage, they admitted to neglecting their mortgage rates under the assumption they already receive the best available terms.

Julie Sæle, also interviewed by ba.no while shopping in Bergen during her parental leave, estimated that the rate hike adds roughly one thousand kroner per month to her housing expenses. Sæle acknowledged she has considered negotiating her rate with her bank or fixing the interest rate, though she has not yet initiated the process.

Pruning Subscriptions and Double Insurance

Beyond housing loans, fixed household expenditures present immediate opportunities for cost reduction. Bryner pointed out that cumulative monthly charges for unused or forgotten digital services drain budgets quickly, noting that six distinct subscriptions billed at 120 kroner each month total 8,640 kroner over the course of a year, ba.no reported. The Nautnes household identified this exact category as an area requiring immediate review, admitting they maintain too many ongoing subscriptions.

Insurance policies represent another common source of financial leakage. According to Huseierne, policyholders frequently carry duplicate coverage without realizing it, paying multiple premiums for protections that overlap within a single household, ba.no reported. Fanaposten similarly highlighted that comprehensive household reviews spanning mortgages, electricity, and insurance are essential tools for stopping ongoing financial leaks for families across the region.
