Speaking to BBC Newsnight, Hunter reflected on receiving a pardon from his father during the final weeks of the Biden presidency back in December 2024. The pardon arrived just weeks before Hunter was scheduled to face sentencing on federal tax evasion and firearm charges. At the time of the executive action, Donald Trump characterized the move publicly as an abuse and miscarriage of justice.
During the Friday broadcast, Hunter acknowledged his unique position regarding the legal reprieve. According to his statements on the program, he views himself as exceptionally fortunate. “I am the most privileged person, as it relates to that, that there could possibly be. I was one of one, and I am eternally grateful for it,” Hunter told BBC Newsnight.
Despite his gratitude for the legal outcome, Hunter evaluated the broader political fallout of the decision with notable candor. “Was it good for our Constitution? Was it good for the American people? Was it good for my dad’s legacy? No, on all counts,” he stated on the air.

He argued that the former president has lived up to expectations regarding political retaliation. “I am eternally grateful for it because I think that Donald Trump has proven to be exactly who my dad thought he was going to be, as it relates to the revenge and retribution that he would seek on his political enemies,” Hunter explained during the interview.
Reiterating his intention to remain vocal about the political landscape, Hunter dismissed notions that he would retreat from public commentary. “I’m not going to stop talking about Donald Trump,” he concluded on the BBC program. “Donald Trump is the singular existential threat to this globe. Donald Trump is, literally, a greater threat than we have faced in any of our lifetimes.”
