Hungarian Police Officer Dies After Being Struck by Car on Highway 8

A 22-year-old police officer, Zalavári Bálint Zsolt, died in hospital on Thursday following a collision with a vehicle while on duty along the 8-as főút (Route 8) near Veszprém, Hungary. The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning as officers responded to a report of a deer carcass obstructing the roadway.

According to police reports, Zalavári and his partner were in the process of removing the animal from the road when a car traveling in the opposite direction struck their patrol vehicle and subsequently hit both officers. Both officers sustained critical injuries and were transported to a hospital. Zalavári succumbed to his injuries later on Thursday.

Zalavári Bálint Zsolt was born on April 14, 2003, in Veszprém. He completed ten months of police academy training and was initially appointed as a patrol officer with the Veszprémi Rendőrkapitányság (Veszprém Police Headquarters) on January 14, 2025, in a probationary capacity. His position was made permanent on January 14, 2026.

The driver of the vehicle involved, along with four other occupants, similarly sustained injuries in the crash. The extent of their injuries has not been disclosed.

The Veszprém Vármegyei Rendőr-főkapitányság (Veszprém County Police Headquarters) and the national police force, Magyarország Rendőrsége, have expressed their condolences to Zalavári’s family. An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision is ongoing.

The incident took place at the 56th kilometer marker of Route 8. Police had activated their emergency lights while working to clear the roadway of the deer when the collision occurred.
