Human Skull Found in Rezé, France: Murder Investigation Launched
A human skull was discovered in a trash bag inside an abandoned building in Rezé, a suburb of Nantes in western France, in the early hours of Tuesday, March 24th. Authorities have opened a murder investigation, though no specific leads have yet been identified, according to the prosecutor’s office.
The discovery was made by a group engaged in “urbex,” the practice of exploring abandoned locations, shortly after 1:00 AM. The group reportedly found several trash bags and, upon inspection, discovered the skull inside one of them. They immediately alerted the authorities.
Antoine Leroy, the local prosecutor, confirmed the opening of a murder investigation. “Though, at this stage, no line of inquiry is being prioritized,” Leroy stated. Investigations are ongoing, with the Organized Crime and Specialized Division (DCOS) now involved in the case.
Rezé, located in the Loire-Atlantique department of the Pays de la Loire region, has a population of approximately 43,556 as of 2023. The commune has a history dating back to the Roman era, originally known as Portus Ratiatus, a significant port in antiquity. It is situated south of Nantes, separated by the Loire River, and was once a bishopric.
The abandoned building where the skull was found has not been publicly identified. Investigators are currently analyzing the remains and the surrounding area for further clues. The DCOS involvement suggests a potential complexity to the case, indicating a focus on organized crime or specialized investigative techniques.
