Human-Caused Hawk Fire Forces Thousands to Evacuate Reno, Nevada

According to data posted by the National Interagency Fire Center’s Inciweb, the fire expanded rapidly through Sunday, reaching more than 15,000 acres. The zone of people urged to “go now” reached the edge of the University of Nevada on Sunday.
State and local authorities have moved swiftly to manage the crisis. Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo activated the National Guard and declared a state of emergency in Washoe County, freeing up crucial federal resources. “This is an active and rapidly evolving situation, and I urge everyone in the affected areas to remain vigilant and follow the direction of local officials,” Lombardo stated on social media.
Washoe County Sheriff Darin Balaam urged residents in the path of the flames to leave immediately. “If you can get out now, I would ask you please to do that,” Balaam said, emphasizing that early departures clear roads for emergency personnel. Evacuees have sought shelter at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center, where hundreds spent Saturday night, according to NPR member station KUNR reporting.
Human Cause and Extreme Weather Challenges
Investigators have confirmed that human activity triggered the disaster. Shane Akerson, a battalion chief with the Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District and an incident commander for the Hawk Fire, addressed reporters late Sunday morning. “We can confirm that the fire was human caused,” Akerson stated, noting that the origin remains under active investigation.
The fire’s aggressive expansion is heavily tied to regional weather patterns. Richard Edwards, fire chief at Truckee Meadows Fire and Rescue, pointed to red flag fire conditions—characterized by warm temperatures, low humidity, and strong winds—as the primary drivers. “The Hawk Fire is a very dynamic incident for us, as it’s being driven by the winds,” Edwards said in a video statement. “The wind-driven fires move very rapidly into our residential areas, creating a lot of challenges for our firefighters to save homes and protect lives.”
At least six individuals, including three first responders and three civilians, have sustained injuries in the chaos. Several properties have already been destroyed as 800 emergency personnel battle the flames.

The Hawk Fire is part of a punishing wildfire season across the American West. Data from the National Interagency Fire Center shows that more than 7.7 million acres have burned nationwide this year, representing the largest year-to-date area in a decade. Firefighters are actively fighting 79 large fires across 18 states.
Locally, the Hawk Fire marks the third major wildfire to strike northern Nevada in recent weeks. Sheriff Balaam noted that the Bug Fire, which started August 8 just north of the Hawk Fire’s footprint, has burned nearly 94,000 acres and reached 94% containment. Meanwhile, the Stallion Fire, which broke out two days later, has consumed just over 40,000 acres and stands at 98% containment.
