HUCA‘s Plastic Surgery Department Celebrates 50 Years as Top-Ranked service
Oviedo, Spain – The Plastic Surgery department of the Central University Hospital of Asturias (HUCA) is celebrating its 50th anniversary this September 26th, marking five decades of innovation adn patient care. The department, led by Dr. Daniel Camporro, has risen to become one of the four best-valued plastic surgery services in Spain, achieving the highest rating within HUCA’s portfolio of services according to the health reputation monitor.
The team of twelve specialists and ten residents performs approximately 1,500 surgical interventions requiring hospital admission and 2,500 major ambulatory procedures annually. HUCA’s Plastic Surgery department also serves as a National Health System Reference Center (CSUR) for Brachial Plexus Surgery, completing between 35 and 40 complex procedures each year for patients nationwide.
Beyond brachial plexus repair, the department specializes in burn care, limb reconstructions (upper and lower), muscle functional transplants, wrist arthroscopies, and peripheral nerve surgery. Close collaborations with the Breast Pathology Unit, otorhinolaryngology, neurosurgery, thoracic surgery, and traumatology departments allow for comprehensive care, including breast reconstructions and treatment of complex trauma and chest wall defects.
throughout its history, the department has achieved several national firsts, including the first reimplantation of an amputated finger in Spain in 1978, performed by Dr. Peña; the first free jejunal flap reconstruction of a pharyngeal defect in the contry in 1990, led by Dr.Sánchez Lorenzo; and a vascularized allotransplant of one arm for a patient with bilateral amputation in 2012, a procedure undertaken by the entire team.
