Howie Mandel Clashes with Kelly Ripa & Mark Consuelos Over Age Remark
Comedian Howie Mandel experienced a tense exchange with television hosts Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos on Monday’s episode of “Live with Kelly and Mark” after Ripa commented on his appearance following his 70th birthday.
The exchange began when Ripa and Consuelos congratulated Mandel on reaching the milestone age. Ripa remarked, “It doesn’t make any sense,” prompting Mandel to inquire, “What do you mean it doesn’t make any sense?” according to reports from Page Six and Yahoo Entertainment.
Consuelos attempted to clarify his wife’s comment, stating that Mandel looked “great.” Mandel responded skeptically, questioning the significance of the compliment. “That I look great? That doesn’t mean anything,” he said. He explained his discomfort with the phrasing, arguing that such compliments often serve as caveats when someone is told they are 70 years old.
Ripa interjected to assure Mandel that their intention wasn’t to suggest he looked good *for* his age, but rather that he looked good, period, and that she didn’t believe he was 70. “We’re saying you look great and I don’t believe you’re 70,” Ripa clarified.
Mandel continued to express his frustration, comparing the sentiment to saying someone is “smart for a stupid person.” The Daily Mail reported that Mandel found the comment offensive.
The conversation shifted when Mandel revealed his rigorous workout routine, attributing his physical condition to an unusual regimen recommended by Jerry O’Connell. “Your friend, Jerry O’Connell, got me into the most ridiculous workout I’ve ever done in my life,” Mandel explained. He described swimming with ankle cables attached to the side of the pool and using frying pan paddles for resistance.
Mandel, who celebrated his 70th birthday in November, likewise discussed his healthy lifestyle in a previous interview with GQ, noting a preference for vegetables and fruit, with chocolate as his only indulgence. He also mentioned maintaining an active lifestyle and regular medical checkups since being diagnosed with high cholesterol.
Ripa and Consuelos are known for openly discussing personal matters on their reveal, including their own marital disagreements, with Consuelos telling Entertainment Tonight that the show provides a “safe space” to address difficult topics. Kelly Ripa has also stated that they often discuss issues on air rather than privately.
