Howard County Police Shooting: Man Killed in Columbia | March 1

March 2, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Howard County police are releasing preliminary information regarding a fatal shooting involving HCPD officers in Columbia early Saturday morning. At approximately 12:09 a.m., officers responded to a call at an apartment building in the 6400 block of Freetown Road concerning an adult male reportedly threatening self-harm.

According to police, officers encountered the man outside the building at approximately 12:22 a.m. The man, reportedly armed with a knife, allegedly disregarded repeated commands to drop the weapon before being shot by officers. Life-saving measures were attempted at the scene, but the man was pronounced dead.

No officers sustained injuries during the incident. The Howard County Police Department confirmed that the Maryland Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division (IID) has assumed control of the investigation, as per Maryland law. The IID will be responsible for releasing any further information pertaining to the shooting.

The incident occurs within a context of increased police presence in the Columbia area. In April 2025, Howard County Executive Calvin Ball and HCPD Chief Gregory Der announced the permanent addition of police units to downtown Columbia, including the Mall in Columbia, the Merriweather District, and the Columbia Lakefront. This decision followed the unveiling of a “Crime Reduction Plan” for the area in February 2025. According to a statement released at the time, the HCPD reported no gun crimes or shooting incidents in the area since the plan’s implementation, and officers had addressed quality-of-life complaints such as disorderly conduct and noise violations.

The Howard County Police Department provides a range of services, including animal control, cold case investigations, community outreach, and victim and witness support, according to the department’s website. Residents can file online police reports and pay traffic citations online. The department also offers resources for reporting tips anonymously, including a dedicated line for drug activity.

All media inquiries regarding the shooting on Freetown Road have been directed to the Maryland Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division.
