How Humans Discovered Dinosaurs After Mistaking Them for Giants
From Mythical Giants to Prehistoric Reality
For centuries before the formal birth of paleontology, human communities encountering massive fossilized remains across the landscape attributed them not to extinct prehistoric reptiles, but to mythical dragons or a vanished race of biblical giants. Robert Plot and the First Documented Bone
The earliest documented and recognized description of a dinosaur bone belongs to English naturalist and antiquarian Robert Plot, according to historical accounts published between 1676 and 1677. In his work, Plot described various mineral stones, fossils, and an enormous thigh bone that he ultimately attributed to a giant human who had lived on Earth in ancient times.
Centuries later, scientists identified Plot’s specimen as the distal femur of a Megalosaurus—a carnivorous theropod that grew between six and seven meters in length, with a thigh bone measuring roughly 80 centimeters.
William Buckland and the Birth of a Genus
Nearly a century and a half passed after Plot’s publication before English geologist and paleontologist William Buckland officially named and described the first dinosaur genus, according to historical records. Buckland’s work broke decisively with the prevailing folklore of giants and dragons, establishing that these colossal remains belonged to extinct reptilian species.
This foundational identification set the stage for subsequent 19th-century discoveries, which later sparked intense academic rivalries such as the famous “Bone Wars” in the United States between paleontologists Edward Drinker Cope and Othniel Charles Marsh.
The Chicxulub Impact and Global Extinction
Modern scientific consensus attributes the disappearance of these massive creatures to a cataclysmic extinction event roughly 66 million years ago. According to contemporary researchers, a 10-kilometer-wide asteroid struck the Earth at immense velocity, gouging out the 180-kilometer-wide Chicxulub crater in Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula.
The impact unleashed staggering amounts of energy, generating tsunamis reaching heights of 10 kilometers and injecting vast quantities of gas and debris into the atmosphere. This debris layer blocked sunlight for an extended duration, plunging the planet into an impact winter that devastated global food chains and eradicated approximately 75 percent of all plant and animal species on Earth, sparing primarily smaller organisms that required minimal nourishment.
