El Teteo, a series of community-focused gatherings founded by Dominican American actor, comedian, and viral digital creator Sasha Merci, is reshaping the social landscape for Latine creatives in Los Angeles. By blending cultural celebration with networking, the events provide a space for Caribbean and Afro-Latino artists often marginalized by Hollywood casting standards.
The Genesis of a Cultural Movement
Launched on February 26, 2022, to celebrate Dominican Independence Day, the inaugural El Teteo event drew 600 attendees to a Los Angeles venue. The project was born from Merci’s personal experience with isolation after moving from New York City to the West Coast. According to her account, the lack of representation for Dominican and Caribbean Latines in Los Angeles created a culture shock, prompting her to partner with Dominican American realtor Angela Carrasco and Dominican American actress and host Katherine Castro to establish a cultural hub.
The term “teteo,” originating from Dominican slang, refers to partying and gathering anywhere. Merci emphasizes that the events are designed to mirror the communal spirit of her Bronx roots, utilizing music, food, and social connection to bridge the gap between diverse Latine diasporas, from Mexicans to Dominicans. This initiative addresses the gap for Caribbean actors, directors, producers, and screenwriters who leave Los Angeles because they can’t find community.
Challenging Hollywood’s Casting Archetypes
The success of these gatherings highlights a persistent friction within the entertainment industry regarding representation. Merci reports that Afro-Latina Caribbeans frequently struggle against casting expectations that favor light-skinned mestizas with straight dark hair. This often leads to talent being considered “other” or “not Latina enough” in Hollywood.
By curating a space that prioritizes Dominican cultural elements—including music and hookah—El Teteo serves as a cultural hub. The first event attracted Latines in entertainment from television productions, including Insecure, On My Block, Gentefied, Station 19, and How I Met Your Father. For these attendees, the event functions as a place to network and build community.
Scaling the Model: From LA to Global Ambitions
As the project matures, the focus is shifting toward its impact. Merci has announced plans to bring El Teteo to New York City, aiming to make it a global event. This expansion involves a partnership with the Dream Project to support educational opportunities for Dominican youth, signaling a transition to an entity with philanthropic and community-building goals.
The Business of Representation
The industry’s failure to invest in Caribbean and Afro-Latino narratives is frequently framed by executives who don’t believe they exist. However, Merci points to the diverse crowds at concerts featuring artists like Juan Luis Guerra and Romeo Santos as evidence of a massive, underserved demographic.
