Fight Breaks Out Over limited-edition Starbucks ‘Bearista’ Cup in Houston
A limited-edition starbucks cup shaped like a bear sparked a disturbance at a Houston-area Starbucks location on November 6th, leading to a call for law enforcement. Harris County deputies with constable Mark herman’s Office responded to a Starbucks in the 3000 block of FM 1960 near Aldine Westfield Road around 5:03 a.m. after reports of individuals refusing to leave the store and fighting over the new “Bearista” cup.
The “Glass Starbucks Bearista® Cold Cup,” priced at $29.95, features a bear-shaped glass design with a straw and a festive green beanie. Starbucks had announced the release of its holiday merchandise line, including the Bearista cup, on November 6th. The company promised the cup would “bring instant joy to every sip.”
According to a Facebook post from Constable mark Herman, deputies were dispatched ”to restore peace before anyone spilled their latte or lost their teddy bear.”
Despite shipping more Bearista cups to stores than almost any other holiday merchandise item, Starbucks acknowledged the high demand. “despite shipping more Bearista cups to coffeehouses than almost any other merchandise item this holiday season, the Bearista cup and some other items sold out fast,” Starbucks told NBC News in an email. “We understand many customers were excited about the Bearista cup and apologize for the disappointment this may have caused.”
The cups are now appearing on resale sites for hundreds of dollars. Starbucks customers still have an opportunity to obtain a special cup on November 13th, which is Red Cup Day, where a grande-sized reusable red holiday cup is given to customers who purchase any size holiday beverage.
