Hospital Recycles PPE for Powerful Sculpture | Jackson’s Artwork
A sculpture constructed from recycled personal protective equipment (PPE) has been installed at the G.V. (Sonny) Montgomery VA Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi, intended as a visible representation of resilience and shared experience for staff and patients, according to hospital officials.
Dr. Joe Parker, an intensive care physician at the facility, stated that the artwork was designed “to be heard and felt by everyone” within the hospital. The initiative arose from the hospital’s efforts to reuse materials during periods of supply chain challenges, a practice that has become increasingly common in healthcare settings nationwide.
The G.V. (Sonny) Montgomery VA Medical Center, which operates under the Department of Veterans Affairs, provides a range of health services to veterans, their families, and caregivers. The facility, located at 1500 East Woodrow Wilson Avenue in Jackson, is currently led by Executive Director Michael Renfrow, who recently received national recognition from the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) for his leadership in patient safety and mentorship.
The hospital is hosting a Veterans Town Hall in Greenville, Mississippi, on April 8, 2026, at the Buster Morlino Community Center in Leland. The event, scheduled from 12:00 p.m. To 1:30 p.m. Central Time, will provide updates on VA services and allow veterans to submit questions in advance.
The VA Jackson health care system offers a variety of services, including audiology, with diagnosis and treatment for conditions like tinnitus, vertigo, and hearing loss. Transportation assistance is available to veterans through both Disabled American Veterans (DAV) vans and other local van services, as well as a paratransit service accessible by calling 601-952-1000. Beneficiary travel benefits, including mileage reimbursement, may also be available to eligible veterans.
The sculpture’s creation reflects a broader trend of healthcare facilities adapting to resource constraints and finding innovative ways to support staff morale. Jackson Hospital in Montgomery, Alabama, recently completed a Community Health Needs Assessment and is currently constructing an Interfaith Chapel to provide a quiet space for patients and visitors.
