Hong Kong Racing Incident Report – Key Findings & Stewards’ Decisions
Sha Tin Racecourse witnessed a series of incidents during the Luger Handicap on Saturday, March 21, 2026, resulting in multiple reprimands for jockeys and post-race veterinary examinations for several horses. The race, the first of ten on the card, saw contact between runners and concerns over riding tactics.
Robot Star, ridden by Zac Purton, was involved in two separate incidents. Leaving the 1100-meter mark, the horse made contact with Forza Toro due to both runners shifting ground. Shortly after, Robot Star raced keenly and was checked when crowded between Lucky Secret, which had given ground, and Winning Diamond, ridden by Matthew Yeung, who had shifted out. Hugh Bowman, aboard Forza Toro, was reprimanded for insufficient racing room to runners inside, even as Yeung was advised to exercise more care. Robot Star was sent for sampling post-race.
Further trouble arose near the 50-meter mark when Robot Star was checked to avoid Mega Mastermind, ridden by Brenton Avdulla, which shifted out abruptly before being corrected. Avdulla received a severe reprimand and was warned that in similar circumstances, he would be expected to stop riding and straighten his mount sooner. Mega Mastermind was also sent for sampling.
Bucephalas, ridden by Derek Leung, experienced a bump at the start and also made contact with Matsu Victor leaving the 1100-meter mark as both horses shifted ground. Leung reported that his mount gave ground noticeably near the 200-meter mark but could offer no excuse for the performance. A veterinary inspection following the race revealed no significant findings.
Forza Toro, ridden by Bowman, had a challenging start, jumping only fairly and being crowded by Winning Diamond, which shifted out. Bowman also acknowledged the contact with Robot Star at the 1100-meter mark. The horse raced wide and without cover throughout the majority of the event.
Several other horses were impacted by the crowded conditions. The Absolute, ridden by Luke Ferraris, shifted out on jumping and was bumped. Grand Turbo, ridden by Richard Kingscote, was bumped by The Absolute on jumping and later checked to avoid Lucky Secret near the 800-meter mark. Lucky Secret was steadied when crowded between Winning Diamond and Matsu Victor. Fighting Machine, ridden by Karis Teetan, jumped awkwardly and became unbalanced after being bumped by Grand Turbo.
Matsu Victor, ridden by Vincent Ho, encountered difficulty obtaining clear running near the 300-meter mark when positioned close to Robot Star as that runner was checked. Circuit Marshal, ridden by Jerry Chau, was steadied leaving the 800-meter mark to avoid Grand Turbo. Both Circuit Marshal and Lucky Secret were sent for sampling post-race.
Dylan McMonagle, aboard Glorious Success, stated that the early stages of the race were run slightly outside of standard time, causing his mount to finish in a one-paced manner. A veterinary inspection did not reveal any significant findings.
A warning was placed on the racing manners of Mega Mastermind following the abrupt shift that impacted Robot Star. The Hong Kong Jockey Club has not yet announced any further action regarding the incidents.
