Hong Kong Racing Incident Report: Key Findings & Stewards’ Decisions

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

Hong Kong racing authorities have deemed the performance of Bling Bling Genius “unacceptable” following a disappointing showing in the NG Fong Handicap at Happy Valley on February 11, 2026. Jockey Zac Purton was unable to offer any explanation for the horse’s lackluster run, stating that Bling Bling Genius was under pressure 600 meters from the finish.

Stewards’ reports indicate that the five-year-old Irish gelding, trained by Dennis Whyte, will be required to undergo a barrier trial and a veterinary examination before being permitted to race again. Samples were taken from Bling Bling Genius post-race for analysis.

The race was not without other incidents. B Avdulla, riding Perfect Peach, pleaded guilty to careless riding after causing interference with Carryon Smiling approaching the winning post. Avdulla received a one-day suspension, to be served on March 4, 2026, at Happy Valley. The stewards assessed the carelessness as grade 2, with consequences likewise graded at 2, taking into account Avdulla’s previously excellent record.

Carryon Smiling’s jockey, J Orman, reported that the horse had been crowded for room during the race and was also held up for clear running after passing the 300-meter mark. Young Horizon, also competing in the race, had its left hind plate refitted in the saddling stalls and was cleared to race by the veterinary officer.

R Kingscote, aboard Run Run Timing, was reprimanded for failing to exit sufficient racing room for runners to his inside. Podium was steadied when placed in restricted room to the inside of Run Run Timing, which was positioned forwardly. Smiling Emperor experienced a slow start and was bumped on the hindquarters by Perfect Peach approaching the winning post.

Trainer Francis Lor advised that Ever Smart was intentionally ridden in a forward position but was unable to maintain the quick tempo of the race and failed to finish strongly over the 1650-meter distance. A veterinary inspection following the race did not reveal any significant findings for Ever Smart, Bling Bling Genius, or Strongest Boy.

Strongest Boy was bumped by Meepmeep shortly after the start. H Bentley, riding Strongest Boy, explained that he attempted to move off the rail due to the fast pace, anticipating that the field would slow down. Meepmeep’s rider, B Avdulla, also pleaded guilty to a careless riding charge related to the incident approaching the winning post.
