Hong Kong Cancer Fund: Norman Ng Highlights Volunteer Appreciation & Patient Support
Hong Kong cancer survivor Norman Ng publicly acknowledged the dedication of volunteers and medical professionals at the Hong Kong Cancer Fund’s 2025 Volunteer Appreciation Ceremony, highlighting the critical role of community support in patient care.
Ng, who serves as Director of Patient Advocacy and Public Affairs at Healthcare Thinkers and Convenor of the Hong Kong Lung Cancer Patient Concern Group, expressed his gratitude in a recent LinkedIn post. He specifically thanked the Hong Kong Cancer Fund’s social work team for organizing activities that address the holistic needs of cancer patients, emphasizing that care extends beyond medical treatment, and medication.
“We all understand that cancer patients demand more than just medical treatment and drugs – what matters most is the care and companionship from society, and the chance to use our own experiences to help others,” Ng wrote.
He also recognized the contributions of several doctors – Dr. Lam Bing, Dr. Anita Lo, and Dr. Johnny – and other healthcare workers who volunteer their time and expertise to support patients. Ng extended a special thank you to Iris, Head of Service at the Hong Kong Cancer Fund, for building a supportive platform for the cancer community.
Ng’s advocacy for lung cancer patients extends to supporting the implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) in screening programs. He recently expressed being “truly inspired” by a presentation on a local AI-assisted lung cancer screening program, noting its potential to craft screening more affordable and accessible. A single low-dose CT scan in Hong Kong currently costs approximately C$350, but AI could potentially reduce that cost by nearly half, according to Ng.
As the convenor of the Lung Cancer Concern Group, Ng has also voiced encouragement regarding the Hong Kong Government’s recent Policy Address on cancer prevention, screening, diagnosis, and treatment. He highlighted initiatives such as expanding HPV self-sampling, commissioning AI-assisted lung cancer screening, enhancing genetic testing, and accelerating drug approvals. He also looks forward to the World Cancer Congress 2026 being hosted in Hong Kong, viewing it as an opportunity to foster global collaboration and advance local cancer strategies.
Ng’s commitment to cancer care is rooted in his personal experience as a cancer survivor. He described the moment at the Volunteer Appreciation Ceremony as “profoundly meaningful,” emphasizing the power of collective support in the fight against cancer.
