Norwich Man Overcomes Homelessness to Begin University Studies
A Norwich man who experienced homelessness is embarking on a new chapter, beginning a foundation year at the University of East Anglia (UEA). Carlton, 29, is pursuing his academic goals after receiving support from the Emmaus Norfolk and Waveney charity, wich provides accommodation and work experience for formerly homeless individuals. His journey highlights the transformative power of support systems and the potential for individuals to rebuild their lives.
carlton’s story resonates as homelessness remains a critical issue across the UK, with increasing numbers of people facing precarious housing situations. His success demonstrates the impact of charities like Emmaus in offering not just shelter, but also the tools and confidence needed to reintegrate into society and pursue educational opportunities. He is currently writing a book about his experiences.
Carlton initially felt out of place when he joined Emmaus, joking that he was “the old guy on campus” due to his age compared to other residents. However, he quickly found camaraderie with others facing similar challenges. “You meet people in a similar situation to you and you never know what people are going through, so it’s crucial to reach out to people – and ask for help when you need it,” he said.
Emmaus Norfolk and Waveney has lauded Carlton’s progress, noting his significant gains in confidence, self-esteem, and skills. A spokesperson for the charity stated they are “incredibly proud of everything he’s achieved and wish him all the very best with his studies.” Carlton’s foundation year at UEA will prepare him for an undergraduate degree course.
