Holland Taylor says she left Two and a Half Men contract over low pay
Holland Taylor revealed she refused to renew her contract on Two and a Half Men after six years due to low compensation and a lack of professional courtesy, opting instead to appear occasionally as a guest star, according to yahoo.com.
The actress played Evelyn Harper, the mother of Charlie Harper and Alan Harper, across the CBS sitcom’s long-running broadcast. Speaking on the Oct. 21 episode of Alchemy with Anthony Mason, Taylor detailed how her departure from a standard series regular contract unfolded after six years on the program.
Stepping Away From the Studio Contract
Taylor explained that producers were “astonished” when she declined to sign on for further contracted seasons, preferring the autonomy of freelance guest appearances. “I stopped being under contract. So, in other words, they would say, ‘Can you do a guest appearance at the end of March?’ And I would say, ‘No, I cannot,'” Taylor said on the podcast. “I only did it if I wanted to do it.”
The 83-year-old actress noted that while she appreciated aspects of the production, the network environment lacked basic workplace consideration. “I loved a lot about that show, but they were not full of courtesies,” she stated.
Stagnant Pay Prompts Taylor to Drop Contract
Beyond scheduling flexibility, Taylor pointed to stagnant pay rates during her tenure as a primary factor in her decision to drop her contract. Despite earning four Emmy nominations for her portrayal of the mother, her salary failed to increase.
“They never paid me very well on that show. I was paid on that show what I had made on a series like eight years before or something,” she said. “And I got four Emmy nominations and they never gave me a raise. They usually do.”
When she informed the team that she would no longer tie herself to a full-time agreement, producers initially assumed she was negotiating. According to Taylor, representatives told her they could not afford to pay her more money. Her response was direct: “You could actually pay me the cost of this building, but don’t bother because I don’t want to continue on under contract.”

While Taylor transitioned to guest appearances, the series experienced other major cast turbulence during its run. Charlie Sheen exited the show in 2011 following public struggles with substance abuse and clashes with executive producer Chuck Lorre, leading to his character being killed off and Ashton Kutcher joining the cast in the later seasons.
