Historic White River Flooding Hits Indianapolis: 5 Dead Across Indiana

August 17, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

At least five people have died following days of torrential downpours and record-setting flooding across Indiana, prompting emergency declarations in more than a dozen counties, active water rescues, and voluntary evacuations along swelling river corridors, according to state and local officials.

According to abcnews.com and local officials, the fatalities include a 58-year-old woman in Delaware County whose body was recovered after she attempted to drive through floodwaters, a teenager in the same county following a river disappearance, and a 4-year-old boy in Jennings County killed when a tree fell on his home.

Record-Breaking Crests Along the White River

Water levels along the White River reached unprecedented heights, culminating in what Marion County Emergency Management Director Jacob Spence described as a once-in-a-lifetime flood event. According to the National Weather Service, certain areas received more than 11 inches of rain over a concentrated two-day period. In the communities of Anderson and Noblesville, the White River crested above 24 feet, surpassing previous high-water marks established in 1913.

Indianapolis Department of Public Works Director Todd Wilson warned that conditions remained hazardous while waters continued to rise. The Indianapolis Fire Department reported carrying out 91 water rescues alongside 45 pet retrievals by early Saturday afternoon. National Guard vehicles assisted local first responders in navigating submerged intersections and flooded neighborhoods.

Evacuations and Federal Disaster Relief Efforts

Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett urged residents residing near the White River to evacuate as the city confronted its most severe flooding in more than three decades. City authorities estimated that approximately 400 individuals evacuated northern Indianapolis on their own accord. Meanwhile, the Indiana Governor’s office documented more than 350 evacuations in Delaware County, alongside coordinated evacuations at a senior mobile home community in Tipton County and ongoing welfare checks in Fayette County.

Governor Mike Braun issued a statement addressing the human toll of the disaster. “My heart is with the families and loved ones of the five Hoosiers we have lost and every family whose life has been changed by these storms,” Braun said, urging residents to stay away from dangerous floodwaters. Braun also confirmed that President Donald Trump intends to approve his formal request for federal disaster resources to support ongoing state recovery efforts.

While floodwaters gradually recede in urban centers like Indianapolis where the White River peaked early Sunday morning according to the city Department of Public Works, saturated ground and lingering flash-flood warnings mean the danger has not fully passed. State officials continue to monitor river corridors and advise residents to heed all local safety directives until official all-clears are issued.
