Historic SA Fort Wins Australia’s Top Development Award
A $10 million redevelopment of Fort Largs in Adelaide’s northern suburbs has been awarded two national prizes at the UDIA National Awards for Excellence, taking out both the best masterplanned community and the project of the year awards. The announcement was made on March 21, 2026, according to reports from Glam Adelaide.
The project, undertaken by Australian real estate development company Peet, transformed the 141-year-old, state heritage-listed fort into a residential community comprising over 200 homes. The revitalized precinct also includes cafes, event spaces and public areas, opening the historic fort to the public for the first time in its history.
“We’re delighted that Fort Largs has been recognised as a model for development excellence at the national level,” said Mark Devine, Peet South Australia State Manager. “Fort Largs is a testament to years of dedicated team effort in creating connected, welcoming communities that respect their unique settings.”
Devine highlighted the project’s success in balancing historical preservation with modern development. “Fort Largs shows that you can deliver new homes, public spaces, and a strong local centre while still respecting its history, and that is something we are exceptionally proud of,” he stated.
The redevelopment has integrated the fort into daily life for residents and visitors alike, with new homes, parks, and pathways connecting the community to the coastline. The restored fort now serves as a central hub, hosting eateries, markets, and community events. According to Peet, the project aims to create a space accessible to long-time locals, new residents, and visitors.
The awards were announced via social media by Glam Adelaide, further amplifying the recognition of the project’s success.
