HII Delivers Advanced Submarine Massachusetts to U.S. Navy
Newport News, VA – Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) announced today the delivery of the Virginia-class fast-attack submarine Massachusetts (SSN 798) to the U.S. Navy. The delivery marks a important milestone in the ongoing program to modernize the Navy’s undersea fleet.
The Massachusetts is the 12th Virginia-class submarine delivered by HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) division and the 25th built in a collaborative effort with General Dynamics Electric Boat. This delivery also makes it the fifth U.S.Navy vessel to bear the name of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
“Delivering Massachusetts after its rigorous sea trials is an vital milestone commitment for our team this year,” said Kari Wilkinson, President of NNS. “We are absolutely steadfast in our resolve to increase the pace of submarine construction and see this as a solid step toward our overall objective.”
Construction of the nuclear-powered Massachusetts involved a vast network of skilled workers. More than 10,000 shipbuilders from NNS and Electric Boat contributed to its creation, supported by thousands of suppliers nationwide – including over 20 companies located within Massachusetts itself.
The submarine was christened in May 2023 at NNS, with Sheryl Sandberg, founder of Lean In and former Chief Operating Officer of Meta (formerly Facebook), serving as the ship’s sponsor.
Virginia-class submarines are designed for a variety of missions, including anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, strike, and special operations. They represent a critical component of the U.S. Navy’s ability to maintain undersea dominance.
