High Altitude Snow Melt: Avalanche Risk & Warm Temperatures in Italy

by Emma Walker – News Editor

Italy is experiencing an extended period of mild, spring-like weather as a large high-pressure system settles over the country, bringing warmer subtropical air. The shift from recent cold temperatures is expected to last for several days, with temperatures climbing significantly, particularly at higher altitudes.

Significant anomalies are being recorded at mid-to-high altitudes, above 1500 meters, where temperatures are expected to rise substantially. This phenomenon, known as atmospheric subsidence, will occur without any thermal inversion, leading to a rapid increase in temperatures in mountainous regions. The freezing level is projected to rise to around 2500 meters, a concerning development for snowpack.

The prolonged warm spell poses a threat to snow levels in both the Apennine and Alpine mountain ranges. Accumulated snow from recent weeks is expected to melt quickly, a negative outcome given the currently favorable snow conditions, especially in areas of the Cuneo province. The snow surface will become saturated and heavier, with internal consistency varying significantly. Models, including the GFS, estimate temperatures exceeding 3000-3200 meters for several consecutive days, further destabilizing the snowpack.

This instability significantly increases the risk of avalanches, posing a danger to hikers and skiers. Authorities are urging individuals to carefully consult avalanche bulletins before venturing into mountainous areas.

Initial forecasts suggesting a return to rain between March 2nd and 3rd have been revised, with the high-pressure system now expected to persist longer. While a European-level disturbance is anticipated, the anticyclonic push appears strong enough to deflect incoming Atlantic fronts. Despite this, sufficient rainfall has occurred recently that a period of sunshine is not detrimental.

According to Meteo.it, as of February 25, 2026, the high-pressure system dominates Italy, bringing stable, sunny weather and rising temperatures from North to South. Nebbies and low cloud layers are present in the plains and valleys of central and northern Italy, with clear skies elsewhere. Maximum temperatures are falling in the Northwest and rising in the Northeast, with mild temperatures and peaks around 20°C in central and southern Italy. Similar conditions are expected on February 26, 2026, with morning fog in many areas of the plains and valleys of central and northern Italy. A weak disturbance is forecast to move across northern regions between February 28th and March 1st, 2026.
