Hermann Dies: Beloved Belgian Comic Artist Remembered

March 23, 2026 Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Belgian comic artist Hermann Huppen, widely known simply as Hermann, died on March 22, 2026, at the age of 87, following a two-year battle with cancer. The news was confirmed on his official website and reported by Belgian media outlets on Sunday, March 23, 2026.

Born on July 17, 1938, in Bévercé, near Malmedy, Belgium, Hermann achieved international recognition for his operate on series including Bernard Prince, Comanche, and Jeremiah. He was a defining figure in the Franco-Belgian comics tradition, known for his detailed artwork and compelling storytelling.

Hermann began his career in 1964 in the studio of Greg, a prominent figure in the world of comics. He first gained prominence in 1966, taking over the art duties on Bernard Prince, a series initially scripted by Greg. He later launched Comanche in 1969, a Western series notable for its sympathetic portrayal of Native American perspectives. In 1977, Hermann began writing his own scripts, leading to the creation of Jeremiah, a series that explored psychological and societal themes.

His later works often reflected a critical view of human failings and societal issues, a shift in thematic focus that distinguished his later career. He collaborated with his son, Yves H., on several graphic novels, including the 2016 Western strip, Duke.

Hermann’s contributions to the comics world were widely celebrated. He received the prestigious Grand Prix de la ville d’Angoulême in 2016, one of the highest honors in the industry. He was also a recipient of the Golden Elephant award for best album of the year in 1998, the Marlysaprijs in 2008, and the Gran Guinigi in 2012. In 2012, he received the Golden Elephant for his entire oeuvre, recognizing his lifetime achievements.

According to a statement posted on his website, Hermann completed one final comic strip despite his illness, demonstrating his dedication to his craft. The statement read, “Although weakened, but still brave, he had managed to finish his last album. That shows that he, as always, made sure that everything was in order!”

Hermann is survived by his son, Yves H., who collaborated with him on numerous projects. No details regarding funeral arrangements have been released.
