Dark Spots on the Neck May Signal Underlying Health Issues, Doctors warn
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – What appears as a cosmetic concern - dark, velvety patches on the neck - could be a critical health warning, dermatologists are advising. While some causes are benign, these discolorations can indicate serious conditions like insulin resistance, hormonal imbalances, and, rarely, cancer.
Unlike superficial spots that fade with alcohol, certain neck discolorations persist and often appear in skin folds like the armpits and groin. One key indicator is acanthosis nigricans, a condition frequently linked to metabolic disturbances.
“Acanthosis nigricans doesn’t come off with alcohol and tends to appear in folds such as armpits and groin,” explains dermatological guidance. This type of spot warrants clinical examination due to its potential association with insulin resistance, obesity, and hormonal disorders.
Another, less common possibility is confluent and reticulate papillomatosis, which presents as darkened plaques in a lacy pattern and may be connected to metabolic changes, requiring specialized evaluation.
A simple at-home test can offer initial clues: rubbing the affected area with cotton wool soaked in 70% alcohol. If the discoloration lifts, it’s likely pityriasis versicolor (TFFD) or neglected dermatosis – generally harmless conditions.Though, if the spot remains, exhibits a velvety texture, progressively worsens, or is accompanied by symptoms like rapid weight gain or hormonal shifts, it may signal acanthosis nigricans.
Self-treatment is discouraged in these cases. Dermatologists emphasize that accurate diagnosis is crucial to avoid unnecessary treatments and to identify any underlying metabolic diseases early.”Seeing a dermatologist is always the safest way when in doubt,” experts state, “Correct diagnosis…allows possible associated metabolic diseases to be identified early, ensuring adequate care and peace of mind for the patient.”
