Morrissey reportedly solicited offers for his share of The Smiths‘ song rights, a move quickly shut down by former bandmate Johnny Marr. The attempt to sell Morrissey’s publishing stake has reignited tensions within the iconic British band, decades after their 1987 split, and underscores the complex financial landscape surrounding classic rock catalogs.
The move, revealed after Marr publicly addressed the situation, highlights the ongoing value of The Smiths’ music and the fractured relationships between its members. Control of song publishing rights translates directly into revenue from royalties, licensing, and other uses of the music-a especially lucrative asset in today’s market. The failed attempt to sell, and the swift response from Marr, signals a potential legal battle or further estrangement between the former bandmates.
According to reports, Morrissey initiated contact regarding the sale of his rights. Marr publicly stated he was approached and promptly rejected any offers, emphasizing his commitment to protecting the band’s legacy. “I was informed by Morrissey’s representatives that he was considering selling his publishing,” Marr wrote. “I immediately replied to say that I woudl not consent to such a sale.”
A representative for drummer Mike joyce stated he does not comment on the actions of his former bandmates. The Smiths’ breakup in 1987 was followed by a contentious legal battle over royalties initiated by Joyce in 1996, further straining relationships within the group.
Past attempts at reconciliation have proven unsuccessful. In 2008, Morrissey and Marr met to discuss a potential reunion, wiht Marr describing it as a “very real prospect” for four days before communication ceased. More recently, Marr revealed he declined an offer from AEG Entertainment Group for a reunion that Morrissey had reportedly accepted. The death of bassist Andy Rourke in 2023 effectively closed the door on any possibility of a full reunion.
Morrissey explained his actions by stating, “The songs are me – they are no one else – but they bring with them business communications that go to excessive lengths to create as much dread and spite year after year. I must now protect myself, especially my health.”
