Hematology and Medical Oncology Specialist Dr. salim Başol Tekin has provided crucial details regarding the early diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of cancer types stemming from hematological tumors, affecting the bone marrow or lymph system.
Dr. Tekin explained that hematological tumors are categorized into three primary groups.”One type of cancer within this group is leukemia, or blood cancer, characterized by the uncontrolled proliferation of abnormal white blood cells in the bone marrow. Lymphoma,arising from the lymphatic system,and multiple myeloma,originating from bone marrow plasma cells,are other significant types,” he stated.
Individuals over 50 years of age, those exposed to radiation or certain chemicals, individuals with a family history of hematological cancer, those with suppressed immune systems, and those with long-term infections are considered to be at higher risk.

Symptoms of hematological tumors vary depending on the cancer type and stage. Dr. Tekin highlighted key symptoms to watch for: “unjustified weight loss, persistent weakness, night sweats, unexplained bruising, nose or gum bleeding, recurrent infections, and pain in the neck, armpit, bones, or back.” He emphasized that while these symptoms can indicate other conditions, persistent occurrences warrant medical consultation.
Dr. Tekin pointed out that early diagnosis significantly improves treatment outcomes for most hematological cancers. “Cancer often impacts metabolism, leading to weight loss and appetite changes. This weight loss, along with body infections or unhealthy cell production, can be indicative of the disease and can often be detected through simple blood tests.”
