Heavy Snow and Wintry Blast Cause Disruptions Across New Zealand

June 25, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Over 200 vehicles were stranded on South Island highways as a severe wintry blast triggered by converging weather systems brought heavy snowfall, ice, and gales to New Zealand, according to the NZ Herald. The event led to the closure of multiple schools and prompted warnings from transport authorities about hazardous road conditions.

The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) issued alerts for Porters Pass and other alpine routes, advising drivers of temporary closures due to snow accumulation. “Roads in these areas are becoming impassable, and we urge motorists to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary,” a NZTA spokesperson stated. The Press reported that snowfall was expected to intensify in the coming hours, with conditions worsening overnight.

Southland and Otago regions faced the brunt of the storm, with thick freezing fog complicating visibility. The Otago Daily Times noted that local authorities had deployed gritting trucks and emergency services to manage the crisis. At least 15 schools in the South Island were closed by midday, citing safety concerns for students and staff.

Weather forecasts from the MetService indicated the cold snap would persist through Thursday, with temperatures dropping to -5°C in elevated areas. The NZ Herald reported that gales gusting up to 90 km/h were compounding the challenges, particularly in coastal regions. Transport officials emphasized that road conditions could deteriorate rapidly, urging drivers to check updates before traveling.

Emergency services reported no major incidents as of Wednesday afternoon, though several minor collisions were recorded on untreated roads. The Newstalk ZB coverage highlighted that alpine passes, including the Crown Range and Cobb Pass, remained closed indefinitely. “These routes are critical for regional connectivity, and the disruptions will impact tourism and freight operations,” a local business association representative said.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMO) confirmed it was monitoring the situation but did not declare a formal state of emergency. “We are working closely with local authorities to assess the evolving conditions and provide support where needed,” a NEMO spokesperson said. Residents in affected areas were advised to stockpile essentials and avoid non-essential travel.

As the storm progressed, meteorologists warned of potential flooding in low-lying areas due to melting snow. The NZ Herald reported that the combination of heavy precipitation and freezing temperatures created “dangerous black ice” on untreated roads, increasing the risk of accidents.
