Hearts Beat Dundee 1-0: Oisín McEntee Scores Late Winner | Scottish Premiership

March 21, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

Oisín McEntee scored a crucial late header as Hearts defeated Dundee 1-0 at Tynecastle, solidifying their position at the summit of the Scottish Premiership.

The victory came after a tense encounter where Hearts, having recently suffered a 1-0 defeat at Kilmarnock, appeared to be struggling to break down a resolute Dundee side. The return of key players Lawrence Shankland and Cammy Devlin to the starting lineup, following injury absences, proved pivotal in securing the three points.

Hearts manager Derek McInnes made four changes to the team that lost to Kilmarnock, bringing in Frankie Kent, Jordi Altena, Devlin, and McEntee. A further disruption occurred just before kickoff when centre-back Craig Halkett was forced to withdraw due to a back issue. Shankland, returning after two months sidelined with a hamstring injury, was named on the bench.

Dundee, who had previously secured a win at Tynecastle in April of the previous year, as well made four alterations to their starting eleven, with Brad Halliday, Fin Robertson, Ashley Hay, and Joe Westley entering the side.

Despite dominating possession early on, Hearts found themselves frustrated by Dundee’s organized defense. Claudio Braga had the first clear opportunity in the 27th minute, but his low shot from the edge of the box drifted wide. Landry Kabore then headed wide from an Alexandros Kyziridis cross.

The closest Hearts came to scoring in the first half arrived in added time when Braga’s flick-on found Kabore through on goal, but the striker’s attempted lob sailed off target. Dundee responded with a free-kick from Joe Westley, which was saved by Hearts goalkeeper Alexander Schwolow.

Early in the second half, Braga unleashed a powerful drive from 25 yards that Jon McCracken saved. McInnes then introduced Shankland and Blair Spittal in the 54th minute, hoping to inject further impetus into the attack.

Dundee continued to pose a threat, and Ryan Astley made a crucial intervention in the 73rd minute to prevent Braga from getting a shot away after Jamie McCart headed on Spittal’s delivery. Dundee substitute Murray then fired an effort just over the bar from a Robertson cross.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 77th minute when McEntee rose highest to head Marc Leonard’s free-kick past McCracken, despite the goalkeeper getting a touch. Hearts were reduced to ten men in stoppage time after Frankie Kent received a second yellow card for a foul on Charlie Reilly, but they managed to hold on for the victory.

Celtic and Rangers are scheduled to play Dundee United on Sunday, and the results of those matches will determine whether Hearts can maintain their lead at the top of the Premiership table.
