Seoul, South Korea – Patients recovering from acute cardiac events like myocardial infarction or angina should not assume they are in the clear, as damaged heart muscles can lead to progressive heart failure symptoms, including shortness of breath and fatigue, according to Professor Kim Bum-sung of Konkuk University Hospital. he stressed the importance of regular heart function tests, particularly for individuals wiht risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, and smoking.
Heart failure often presents subtly, with symptoms easily mistaken for normal aging. However, weight gain, swelling in the feet and legs, and a decline in physical stamina can be early indicators requiring careful observation.
The impact of heart failure extends beyond the heart, affecting vital organs like the kidneys, lungs, and liver, and significantly diminishing quality of life. Managing heart failure becomes more complex with age, necessitating adherence to medication, dietary changes, and fluid restrictions.
Professor Kim noted that many heart failure patients have co-existing conditions such as coronary artery disease, hypertension, and diabetes. While medications like beta-blockers, diuretics, and RAS system inhibitors are used, and new drugs improving survival rates have emerged, they are not a sole solution. A thorough approach combining medication with dietary control, weight management, and regular aerobic exercise is crucial.
The most effective strategy for preventing heart failure involves managing initial cardiovascular disease risk factors and undergoing regular checkups for early detection of heart function decline. Individuals over 50, or those with underlying conditions like hypertension and diabetes, should be vigilant for symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, and fatigue. Lifestyle modifications including smoking cessation, reduced salt intake, and consistent exercise are basic preventive measures.
