New research from Wageningen University & Research (WUR) reveals a complex interplay of factors beyond simple willpower that hinder healthy eating habits. The study, led by Sanne Djojosoeparto, demonstrates that financial constraints, stress, and the surrounding habitat all contribute to making nutritious meals tough to attain.

A Nation Falling Short

The research highlights a concerning trend: according to the National Institute for Public Health and the environment, only one in three Dutch citizens adheres to a healthy diet, as defined by the national “Schijf van Vijf” guidelines alcohol consumption.

Though, the WUR study emphasizes that simply wanting to eat healthier isn’t enough. Supermarkets are saturated with tempting, yet unhealthy, options, creating a constant battle for consumers.
