FORT MYERS, Florida – Houston Christian University’s momentum stalled Sunday night, as the Huskies suffered a 2-0 setback against Florida Gulf Coast University at Pickering Field. The defeat halts HCU’s three-game winning streak and marks the start of a challenging five-match road trip.
The Eagles capitalized on first-half opportunities, securing a lead that HCU was unable to overcome despite generating double-digit shot attempts. This loss is particularly important as it initiates a month-long stretch away from home for the Huskies, testing their ability to perform consistently in challenging environments. The team will need to regroup quickly as they prepare for a crucial rivalry matchup against UTRGV.
Florida Gulf Coast struck early, with Edson Murguia finding the net in the 12th minute. Caio Oliveira extended the Eagles’ advantage in the 39th minute, making it 2-0. FGCU‘s efficient offense, converting nine of their 12 shots on goal, proved difficult for the huskies to contain.
HCU goalkeeper Alex aitken delivered a season-best performance with seven saves, but the Eagles’ offensive pressure ultimately proved too much. The Huskies now hold a 4-2-0 record for the season.
Houston Christian will continue its road swing with a Wednesday night contest against UTRGV in Edinburg, Texas, with kickoff scheduled for 6:30 pm. This mid-week clash represents a key possibility for the Huskies to rebound and regain their winning form.
