Hayden Panettiere, Heroes and Nashville Star, Dies at 36
Actress Hayden Panettiere has died at the age of 36, according to reports from TMZ and the New York Post. Her representative confirmed the death on Sunday, describing the former child star as a “force of nature” who brought joy to millions. No official cause of death has been released.
Ongoing Investigation into Circumstances of Death
While the official cause of death remains unclear, law enforcement sources told TMZ that police responded to an incident involving Panettiere. An active investigation is currently underway to determine the exact circumstances of her passing.
Sources informed the Daily Mail that Panettiere and her on-again, off-again boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, flew from Los Angeles to the south just one day before her death. Additionally, those sources noted that the actress had recently been complaining of back pain.
In her May memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, which became a New York Times bestseller, she detailed a lifelong battle with the pressures of fame and substance abuse.
A Career Defined by Genre-Defining Roles
Panettiere entered the industry as a child, securing her first acting role at 11 months old. She achieved global recognition for her portrayal of Claire Bennet, an indestructible cheerleader, on the NBC series Heroes. She later transitioned to the musical drama Nashville, where she played country singer Juliette Barnes.
Beyond television, Panettiere expanded her reach into film and gaming. She appeared in the Scream franchise as Kirby Reed and provided voice acting for the titles Until Dawn and Kingdom Hearts. Her work earned her multiple award nominations throughout her career.
In her memoir, she revealed that she began taking “happy pills” at age 15 to maintain a “peppy” persona during media interviews, a habit that spiraled into a long-term struggle with drug addiction.
Family Tragedy and Mental Health Struggles
Her younger brother, Jansen Panettiere, died in February 2023 at the age of 28 due to an enlarged heart. Panettiere stated in her memoir that she felt she had “lost half of her soul” following his death, noting that the resulting stress led to a “destructive” period in her life.
Panettiere has a daughter, Kaya, born in 2014 to former heavyweight boxing champion Wladimir Klitschko. The actress detailed a harrowing experience nearly dying during childbirth and a subsequent battle with postpartum depression.
During an appearance on the On Purpose with Jay Shetty podcast, Panettiere said she was struggling with mental health, anxiety, and postpartum depression, and that she felt like she had to act her way through it and had completely lost herself.
These struggles led to a difficult decision in 2018 to relinquish custody of her daughter to Klitschko so she could seek the help she “desperately” needed. Panettiere emphasized that her daughter, who now lives in Europe, did not feel abandoned by this choice.
The Cycle of Recovery and Relapse
In a 2022 interview with People, she described sobriety as an “everyday battle” and an “everyday choice.” She expressed gratitude for her recovery, stating she would never take her place in the world for granted again.

Her decision to publish her “reckoning” in May was an attempt to contextualize her struggles for the public, yet the tragedy of her death at 36 leaves those reflections as her final testament.
As the investigation continues in the south, the focus shifts to the guardianship of her 11-year-old daughter and the settlement of her estate.
Whether through the indestructible Claire Bennet or the vulnerable admissions in her memoir, she mirrored the duality of a public persona versus a private struggle—a struggle that, according to her final records, was a constant, daily choice.
