The Greenville County Coroner’s Office released autopsy results on Tuesday establishing the official cause of death. Officials confirmed that Panettiere passed away due to the toxic effects of fentanyl, 4-ANPP, alprazolam, methocarbamol, and quetiapine. The manner of death was ruled an accidental overdose.

Emergency responders arrived at the Greenville residence on the afternoon of August 16. Despite advanced cardiac life support measures administered at the scene, the actor was pronounced dead. The Greenville Police Department stated during the initial response that the investigation revealed no signs of trauma or suspicious circumstances contributing to the incident.

Investigation and Response Timeline at the Scene

According to a police report obtained by CBS News, Panettiere’s on-again, off-again boyfriend Brian Hickerson and his brother Zach were present at the apartment complex when the emergency occurred and placed the 911 call. The report noted that Brian Hickerson showed responding officers a bag of medication that Panettiere was taking. Zach Hickerson later stated to TMZ that Brian administered Narcan, an opioid reversal medication, after discovering the actor unconscious.

Federal authorities also launched inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the death. Alongside local law enforcement, the Drug Enforcement Administration initiated an investigation. Former DEA special agent Bill Bodner, speaking in a separate interview regarding high-profile celebrity overdoses, outlined typical investigative steps for such cases. According to Bodner, investigators often reconstruct a timeline of the final days through digital forensics, examining text messages, phone calls, and social media interactions to trace the source of drug distribution.

Prior to her death, Panettiere spoke openly about her history of substance abuse and mental health challenges. In her memoir, “This Is Me: A Reckoning,” she detailed struggles with alcohol and opioid addiction that began during her youth, alongside experiences with postpartum depression and physical abuse.

In May, Panettiere discussed her recovery path in an interview with CBS News’ Gayle King. She expressed a desire to help others by sharing her experiences, stating that she wanted people to know they could live their truth and embrace their imperfections. Representatives for Brian Hickerson and Panettiere’s mother, Lesley Vogel, did not immediately respond to media requests for comment following the coroner’s announcement.
