Hawai’i Public Schools See Academic Gains, Attendance Rise in Post-Pandemic Recovery
HONOLULU, HI – Hawai’i public school students demonstrated improvements in academic proficiency, attendance, and post-graduation enrollment in the 2024-25 school year, according to data released this week by the Hawai’i State Department of Education. The findings signal a continuing recovery from pandemic-era learning disruptions, though important disparities remain across schools and subject areas.
The data,tracked through the Strive HI performance system,reveals statewide gains in language arts,math,and science,alongside increases in regular attendance and on-time graduation rates. These improvements offer a positive outlook for Hawai’i’s students and educators as they navigate ongoing challenges in the education system. Maui School Performance Highlights:
* H.P. Baldwin High School: In 2024-25, Baldwin students achieved 50% proficiency in language arts (state average: 53%), 18% in math (state: 41%), and 24% in science (state: 43%). Attendance stood at 68% meeting the regular-attendance threshold (statewide: 76%), with a 78% on-time graduation rate (state: 86%).45% of the Class of 2024 enrolled in postsecondary education (state: 53%).
* Maui High School: language arts proficiency at Maui High was a strong point, reaching 65%, exceeding the state average. Science proficiency was 38%, and attendance improved to 72%. The Class of 2025’s preliminary graduation rate is 84%, the best result since the pandemic. Math proficiency remained at 22% (state: 41%), and postsecondary enrollment for the class of 2024 was 49%, below the statewide average.
