Authorities at Dublin Port confiscated nearly seven million cigarettes, worth an estimated 6.25 million euros. The seizure represents a substantial blow to those attempting to profit from illicit tobacco trade, impacting the national revenue.

Container Inspection Reveals Illegal Shipment

The discovery occurred on Tuesday during an examination of an unaccompanied container that arrived from Rotterdam. Customs officials initiated the action based on routine profiling, using advanced technology to detect the contraband.

According to a recent study, the black market for cigarettes costs European Union countries billions in lost tax revenue each year, highlighting the importance of such seizures (Study 2023).

The Investigation

The inspection involved the use of Revenue’s mobile x-ray scanner as well as the assistance of Milo, a detector dog. The cigarettes, branded as “Marlboro”, were seized under the Finance Act of 2001.
