Hansi Flick Tests Frenkie de Jong as Barcelona Centre-Back, Reports Say
Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has tested veteran midfielder Frenkie de Jong at centre-back during training sessions as the club manages the player’s recovery from ongoing knee problems, according to reports.
Frenkie de Jong Tests at Centre-Back During Training
Frenkie de Jong participated in training sessions operating as a centre-back last week while working his way back into full match fitness. Manager Hansi Flick confirmed that the positional experiment remains an option under consideration rather than a permanent tactical change. The adjustment comes as the Dutch midfielder manages knee problems that have persisted since the World Cup.
Medical opinions surrounding the joint have previously suggested surgery might be necessary. Experts have also examined potential instability if the player continues competing without an operation. The physical demands of playing central midfield involve frequent changes of direction, sharp turns, and explosive accelerations in crowded areas. A central defender faces different physical stresses, though the role still requires sudden movements, physical duels, and defensive actions.
Squad Competition and Tactical Flexibility at Barcelona
Tactical factors within the squad also influence the decision to explore alternatives for De Jong’s position. Rodri remains viewed as the primary option in central midfield, while Marc Bernal provides an additional possibility for the role. Competition for central positions makes securing a consistent run of games in his traditional midfield spot more challenging for the Dutchman.
Flick noted that De Jong is not viewed as a natural replacement for Pedri. Finding an alternative position provides the coaching staff with tactical flexibility while keeping the player involved in the squad. Moving to central defence would change the role of a player whose strengths traditionally centre on carrying the ball and controlling possession from deep midfield locations.
Barcelona currently faces a shortage of numbers in central defence following an injury to Andreas Christensen. Flick addressed the possibility ahead of a match against Getafe, stating that De Jong can play in central defence and remains an available option for the team.
