Hang Gliding Crash in Rio: US Tourist & Instructor Die | Brazil News

February 22, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

A U.S. Tourist and a hang gliding instructor died Saturday after their glider crashed into the ocean off São Conrado beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, officials reported.

The accident occurred near the landing zone on the beach, according to Rio de Janeiro’s Fire Department. The instructor was identified as Rodolfo Pascoal Ladeira, a veteran in the sport, and died at the scene. The tourist, Jenny Colón Rodríguez, was initially rescued and transported to a regional hospital in critical condition, but succumbed to her injuries shortly after arrival.

The São Conrado de Voo Livre (Clube São Conrado de Voo Livre), the club responsible for the flight, has suspended its activities for the next three days and is cooperating with investigators. According to a statement released by the club, all documentation related to the glider has been collected and is being made available to authorities. The club is also offering support to the families of the victims. “May the memory of both be a legacy of inspiration, and may we find strength to continue flying, dreaming and living, even in the most difficult times,” the association stated on social media.

The cause of the crash is currently under investigation. Witnesses cited by local media reported a problem with the glider and noted that the emergency parachute did not deploy in time to cushion the impact with the water. Authorities are awaiting the recovery of the glider for a thorough technical evaluation.

The Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro has opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident. The National Civil Aviation Agency (Anac), responsible for overseeing the country’s airspace, will also participate in the inquiry. Anac was recently engaged in public discussions regarding updates to aviation regulations, holding an audience on February 11th, and is currently accepting contributions for the update of Resolution nº 400 until March 9th.

Hang gliding is a popular tourist activity in Rio de Janeiro, offering impressive views of the city. The accident occurred on a stretch of beach frequently used for landings.
