Winter Storm Expected to Bring Snow and Sleet to Coastal Virginia

Coastal Virginia is bracing for a winter storm expected to bring a mix of snow, sleet, and rain beginning January 23, 2026. Teh National Weather Service forecasts varying accumulation amounts across the region, wiht the potential for hazardous travel conditions.

Virginia Beach is currently predicted to receive up to one inch of snow. Norfolk is expected to see approximately 2.2 inches of frozen precipitation, though a notable portion of this could be sleet. The National Weather Service is closely monitoring the stormS track and intensity, and these forecasts are subject to change.

Sleet, a form of precipitation consisting of rain drops that freeze into ice pellets before reaching the ground, poses a particular challenge. it can create slick surfaces and make driving extremely dangerous. The National Hurricane Center explains that even small amounts of sleet can lead to significant travel disruptions.

Residents are advised to prepare for potential power outages and hazardous road conditions. the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is preparing crews and equipment to treat roadways, but motorists are urged to avoid unnecessary travel during the storm.

“It’s vital to stay informed about the latest weather updates and take precautions to ensure your safety,” says a spokesperson for the National Weather Service. “Check your emergency supplies, charge your devices, and be prepared to shelter in place if necessary.”

Local authorities are also reminding residents to check on elderly neighbors and those with disabilities who may need assistance during the storm. Further updates will be provided as the storm approaches and conditions evolve.
