Hamburg Tourism: January 2026 Sees Rise in Guests & Overnight Stays
Hamburg welcomed 499,189 guests and recorded 985,654 overnight stays in January 2026, according to data released by Statistikamt Nord. This represents a 2.9 percent increase in guests and a 1.7 percent rise in overnight stays compared to January 2025.
The data indicates a strong domestic tourism base, with guests from Germany accounting for 807,271 overnight stays – a 1.7 percent increase year-on-year. International visitors contributed 178,383 overnight stays, similarly up 1.8 percent. Foreign guests comprised 16.2 percent of all visitors.
Denmark was the leading source country for international tourists, with 381,430 overnight stays. The United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Austria, and Switzerland followed as significant contributors. However, the number of tourists from the United States decreased by 7.3 percent to 246,378, and from Great Britain by 5.5 percent to 248,424, according to separate reporting from NDR.de.
A total of 421 accommodation establishments, offering 81,545 beds, were included in the survey. The average occupancy rate for beds stood at 39.2 percent. Guests stayed an average of 2.0 nights, according to Statistikamt Nord.
