Gaza City – Hamas has begun deploying fighters across gaza, raising fears of escalating internal violence following a recent clash with the Dughmush clan. The mobilization comes amid uncertainty surrounding governance in Gaza after the recent conflict and as the US pursues a peace plan requiring hamas disarmament.
The tensions were ignited after members of the Dughmush clan were killed, their bodies left in the street, prompting threats of retaliation. Hamas later surrounded an area where over 300 Dughmush gunmen were believed to be positioned, armed with machine guns and improvised explosives.
This morning, Hamas killed one Dughmush member and reportedly kidnapped 30 others. The Dughmush clan reportedly acquired some weapons by looting Hamas depots during the war, while others were long-held possessions.
A Hamas official, speaking from abroad, stated to the BBC, “We cannot leave Gaza at the mercy of thieves and militias backed by the Israeli occupation. Our weapons are legitimate… to resist occupation, and they will remain as long as the occupation continues.”
The developments have sparked concern among security analysts and residents. A retired Palestinian Authority security officer warned the territory is “sliding towards another round of internal bloodshed,” adding,”Hamas hasn’t changed. It still believes that weapons and violence are the only means to keep its movement alive.” He also noted the widespread availability of arms, with weapons stolen from Hamas stores during the war and supplies reportedly received from Israel.
Human rights expert Khalil Abu Shammala expressed concern that Hamas attempts to maintain influence could “jeopardise the agreement and plunge Gaza’s residents into even greater suffering.” He indicated Hamas’s acceptance of the peace plan was driven by significant pressure.
The current unrest follows a ceasefire earlier this week, leaving Gazans already weary after two years of conflict deeply worried about the potential for further instability. The situation also complicates the implementation of US President Donald Trump’s peace plan, which calls for Hamas to disarm.
