Hamas Clashes with Militia Led by Yasser Abu Shebab, Citing Security Threat
Gaza City – A newly formed Hamas security force announced Tuesday it had targeted the militia of Yasser Abu Shebab in the Gaza Strip, claiming to have inflicted “a severe blow” against a group seeking to destabilize internal security.
The “deterrent force,” a security entity recently created by Hamas, stated the operation led to the arrest of several militia members and the confiscation of military equipment used in “subversive activities,” following days of monitoring.
Yasser Abu Shebab was previously imprisoned by Hamas security services but released amidst the chaos following the october 7th attack, as Hamas’s control over Gaza loosened. He resurfaced in 2024, initially with a group called “Anti-terrorist Service,” then “Popular Forces,” which maintains a Facebook presence.
The clashes come after Israeli authorities admitted in June to supporting and arming Palestinian clans opposed to Hamas, tho they did not specifically name Abu Shebab’s group.
hamas’s security unit affirmed it “continuously aims at the lairs” of those who threaten societal security or harbor outlaws. Inter-Palestinian clashes erupted last week in the Chadjaya neighborhood of Gaza City between Hamas forces and armed groups.
