Gyirmót Defeats Kispest-Honvéd in Hungarian Cup Exit
Kispest-Honvéd became the first top-flight team eliminated from the MOL Hungarian Cup this season following a 3–1 defeat against second-division side Gyirmót FC Győr at the Alcufer Stadion, nemzetisport.hu reported. A crowd of 1,425 watched the match, which saw Gyirmót capitalize on defensive mistakes to secure a place in the round of the top 16.
Early Goals Shape the Cup Match in Győr
Gyirmót started aggressively, forcing a shot immediately after the opening kickoff. In the 5th minute, Csanád Novák broke the deadlock by turning in a cross from Tamás Nagy ahead of his defender. Honvéd attempted to respond by taking control of the possession metrics, but struggled to break through the defensive block, managing their first serious attempt only in the 30th minute through Alex Szabó. Just before halftime, Dominik Csontos equalized for the visitors with a strike into the top right corner in the 41st minute.
Second-Half Defensive Errors Seal Elimination
The second half opened with early pressure from the hosts, as Kicsun tested the visiting defense before finding the net in the 56th minute from 11 meters out. Honvéd continued to commit unforced errors in their defensive third, allowing Zsombor Berecz to extend Gyirmót’s lead in the 78th minute with a free-kick from 21 meters. The closing moments yielded multiple yellow cards rather than offensive chances, confirming the lower-league side’s advancement.
Managerial Reactions After the Cup Upset
Gyirmót head coach Ádám Weitner pointed to team cohesion and physical conditioning as decisive factors. Our victory was a triumph of team unity, good tactics, and fitness,
Weitner said according to nemzetisport.hu, adding that he had to instruct his players to attack with more courage at halftime.
On the opposing side, Honvéd manager Maurizio Jakobacci highlighted preventable mistakes. Despite the team having a territorial advantage, unfortunately we had many unforced errors, especially in our defensive third,
Jakobacci stated as reported by nemzetisport.hu. We must wake up and deliver a better performance.
