Gyeonggi-do invests in Future: Selects 50 Universities for Regional Innovation
Gyeonggi-do is doubling down on its commitment to regional innovation by strategically selecting 50 universities to participate in the Regional Innovation-Oriented University Support System (RISE). This initiative aims to foster mutual growth between the region and its academic institutions by delegating administrative and fiscal authority for university support to local government.
Strategic Selection Process
The selection process culminated at the 3rd Gyeonggi-do RISE Commitee meeting,held at the gyeonggi-do Office on the 29th.The committee meticulously deliberated and voted, ultimately finalizing the selection of 50 universities. This includes 38 individual institutions and 12 consortiums, representing 67% of the 75 universities within the province.
RISE: A Policy for Mutual Growth
The RISE initiative is designed to promote the symbiotic relationship between Gyeonggi-do and its universities.By entrusting local governments with the administrative and fiscal responsibilities for university support, the policy aims to tailor resources and strategies to meet the specific needs of the region.

Key Objectives for Selected universities
The selected universities will play a crucial role in achieving Gyeonggi-do’s strategic objectives. These include:
- Fostering leading talent for the seven future growth industries (G7).
- supporting Pangyo+20α startups.
- Training local specialized talent.
- Strengthening high school-university-industry linkages.
- Establishing a northern growth engine hub.
Three Strategic Categories
To ensure strategic and efficient resource allocation, the province categorized universities into three distinct areas:
- Future growth industry leadership.
- Local cluster growth.
- Lifetime vocational education base.
University Selection Breakdown
The selection process involved different tracks and consortiums. Here’s a breakdown:
- Type â‘ (General track): Catholic University (alone 4, consortium 3), Gyeongbok University and three colleges.
- Type ②: Dongguk University (alone 2, consortium 5) and seven universities, plus a university and consortium (alone 7, consortium 2).
- type ③: two consortiums were selected.
Financial Support
The selected universities will receive project funding based on their selection type:
- Type â‘ (General University Track): â‚©4 billion
- Type â‘ (Colleges’ Tracks): â‚©2 billion
- Type ② (General Tracks): ₩2 billion
- Type ② (Colleges Tracks): ₩1.4 billion
- Type ③: ₩1.5 billion

Looking Ahead
The gyeonggi RISE Center will notify each university of the selection results. The request process will conclude in June, marking the beginning of a five-year journey for RISE projects aimed at fostering university and local innovation.
In the process of selecting the university, the foundation for the establishment of a win -win and cooperation system was laid to create a co -cooperative performance by attracting the participation and interest of the city and the cooperation between the universities.
