The regulator issued a rebuke following a recent public campaign by the lobby group that alleged law enforcement officers were abusing their powers during routine interactions with license holders.

Te Tari Pūreke, the agency responsible for administering the Arms Act, stated there is no evidence to support the claims made by COLFO. The regulator’s response follows a series of public statements from the lobby group suggesting that police officers were harassing, intimidating, or bullying firearm owners during compliance checks and licensing processes.
In an official statement, the regulator emphasized that police conduct is subject to established oversight and that any specific allegations of misconduct should be directed through the formal complaints process. The agency asserted that its interactions with the community remain focused on public safety and the administration of the law as mandated by the government.

COLFO’s accusations centered on reports from its members who claimed that police visits were being conducted in an aggressive manner. The group, which advocates for the interests of licensed firearm owners, had urged its members to document and report instances of what it characterized as overreach by officers.
However, the regulator maintained that police officers are required to conduct themselves in accordance with professional standards and that safety checks are a standard component of maintaining a license. The regulator indicated that it has not received a volume of substantiated complaints that would suggest a widespread pattern of behavior as described by the lobby group.

The dispute highlights a long-standing tension between firearm advocacy groups and the regulatory bodies managing the transition to tighter gun control laws in New Zealand. The regulator has advised that any individual who believes they have been treated unfairly by police during a firearms-related encounter should utilize the Independent Police Conduct Authority (IPCA) to lodge a formal complaint.
