Gum Disease & Cancer Risk: Importance of Oral Health
Seoul, South Korea – The Korean Association of Periodontology and the Dongkook Pharmaceutical Corporation held a joint event on Tuesday, March 19, 2026, highlighting the link between gum disease and an increased risk of digestive cancers, particularly esophageal and colorectal cancers.
The event, marking the upcoming 18th Gum Day on March 24th, featured presentations detailing recent research establishing a correlation between poor periodontal health and the development of these cancers. Central University Hospital’s Professor Jae-yong Park, a gastroenterologist, presented findings emphasizing the connection between gum disease and esophageal cancer, noting the direct pathway between the oral cavity and the esophagus. Professor Jung-ki Kuk of Chosun University’s Dental School presented research indicating that bacteria associated with gum disease can influence the early stages and progression of colorectal cancer.
Researchers presented data suggesting that chronic inflammation and changes in oral microbiome, resulting from inadequate gum care, can contribute to the development of digestive cancers. The association was underscored by the Korean Association of Periodontology and Dongkook Pharmaceutical, who jointly proposed a “3.2.4 Rule” for oral hygiene.
The “3.2.4 Rule” encourages individuals to brush their teeth at least three times a day, undergo professional scaling at least twice a year, and utilize interdental brushes to clean between teeth daily. According to the organizations, consistent adherence to these practices can significantly reduce the risk of both gum disease and associated health complications.
Dongkook Pharmaceutical CEO Jun-ho Song stated the company, as the manufacturer of the gum health product “Insadol,” will continue to actively engage in social contribution activities to promote public oral health. Professor Seol Yang-jo, President of the Korean Association of Periodontology, and its executive team presented the guidelines at the event held at the Korea Press Center.
The event also included a presentation by Professor Seong-jo Lee of Dankook University’s Periodontology department, outlining proper oral hygiene practices for cancer patients. The Korean Association of Periodontology and Dongkook Pharmaceutical have not announced any further events or research initiatives following the 18th Gum Day event.
