Gulf Crisis: Diplomacy Ramps Up Amidst Iranian Attacks & Interceptions

March 24, 2026 Priya Shah – Business Editor Business

Saudi air defenses intercepted two ballistic missiles targeting Riyadh on Monday, while Bahrain and the UAE reported downing dozens of drones and missiles launched from Iran, escalating a conflict that is prompting urgent diplomatic efforts to prevent wider regional war. The attacks, which targeted civilian infrastructure, came as foreign ministers from across the Gulf and beyond engaged in a flurry of telephone calls aimed at de-escalation.

Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah spoke with his Thai counterpart Sihasak Phuangketkeow to discuss the regional developments and ongoing efforts to address the crisis, according to Saudi state media. Qatar’s Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani received calls from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the UAE, Egypt, and Türkiye, as well as a call from his British counterpart, all focused on the escalating tensions and the necessitate for a peaceful resolution.

The officials stressed the importance of coordinated action and intensified efforts to achieve an immediate ceasefire, urging a return to dialogue and emphasizing the need to safeguard global energy supplies and maritime navigation, according to statements released by the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The calls reflect a growing international concern over the potential for the conflict to disrupt global energy markets and trade routes.

Kuwait’s Ministry of Defense confirmed its defenses had successfully confronted hostile Iranian rocket and drone attacks, while Bahrain’s defenses reported shooting down two rockets and 36 drones. Bahrain has now intercepted a total of 147 rockets and 282 drones since the start of the Iranian attacks, according to a statement from the Bahraini defense ministry. The UAE intercepted seven ballistic missiles and 16 drones on Monday, bringing its total intercepts to 352 ballistic missiles, 15 rockets, and 1,789 drones since the beginning of the conflict.

Oman, which has historically played a mediating role between the United States and Iran, stated that We see working to ensure safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for global oil shipments. Oman’s Foreign Minister Bad Albusaidi, in a social media post, asserted that Iran was not responsible for initiating the current conflict, stating, “Whatever your view of Iran, this war is not of their making. This represents already causing widespread economic problems.”

The attacks have already impacted global energy markets, with oil prices surging, according to reports. Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar have all seen energy facilities targeted, raising concerns about potential disruptions to oil and gas production. The situation remains fluid, with no immediate indication of a de-escalation, and diplomatic efforts continuing to secure a ceasefire and prevent further escalation.
