Vehicular chaos Grips Downtown Guayaquil Amid Christmas Tree Lighting Event
guayaquil, Ecuador - December 4, 2025 – Major traffic congestion descended upon the center of Guayaquil this Thursday afternoon, disrupting commutes and causing notable delays for drivers. The disruptions are linked to preparations for the “Lighting of the Christmas Tree 2025” event planned for malecón 2000.
According to a 5:30 p.m. report from ECU911, long lines of vehicles formed on Malecón Simón Bolívar Avenue at Colón Street, prompting diversions toward Colón Street and northward along Pedro Carbo. similar congestion was reported on Pedro Carbo Street itself.
The traffic impacted public transportation as well, with Metrovía units experiencing delays navigating the gridlock. Slow-moving traffic and lengthy queues also developed on Boyacá and Piedrahíta streets.
Citizens have appealed for the deployment of traffic agents to alleviate congestion on affected roadways including Escobedo, Clemente Ballén, Aguirre, and luque.
Earlier in the day, the Transit and Mobility Agency advised motorists to utilize alternate routes such as Esmeraldas, José Mascote, and Quito to circumvent the impacted areas. Sections of Malecón simón Bolívar avenue and October 9th Avenue remain closed to vehicular traffic in support of the Christmas tree lighting preparations.
